In response to the arrest of journalist Raman Pratasevich, the Media Council to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania addresses the European Broadcasting Union, the Council of Europe and UNESCO regarding the dire situation of independent media in Belarus.
The Media Council to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania reacts to the detention of journalist Raman Pratasevich. The 20-member council, which includes Neringa Jurčiukonytė, Media4Change’s programme manager, addressed the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the Council of Europe and UNESCO to express concern about the unceasing crackdown on independent media in Belarus.
The authors of the statement call on organizations to help those at risk and to prevent growing terror against Belarusian society and journalists. The Council also notes that Belarus’s national state television and radio Belteleradio’s membership of the EBU must be terminated due to human rights and civil rights violations and providing information support for repressions against journalists in Belarus. The Media Council stands ready to seek ways to assist Belarusian journalists at risk of persecution.
